The Sega Light Phaser was released in 1986 in North America, Europe, and Brazil, but not officially in Japan.
The accessory features a simple design with a single trigger, which functions similarly to Button 1 on a standard Master System controller. While this allows basic menu interaction, the Light Phaser is primarily intended for games specifically designed for light gun gameplay.
The visual design of the Light Phaser closely resembles the weapon featured in Sega’s Zillion anime series, giving it a distinctive futuristic appearance. This design helps establish the accessory as one of the most iconic pieces of Sega hardware from the 8-bit era.
